Perfect places to catch a Wilmington Sunset
Riverlights Boardwalk
This is one of my go-to spots for a relaxing evening stroll and sunset viewing. The boardwalk winds along the Cape Fear River, offering stunning views of the water and the surrounding marshland.
There are plenty of benches and seating areas where you can relax and soak in the scenery. And if you’re feeling hungry, you can grab a bite to eat at Smoke on the Water, a local restaurant with a gorgeous view of the sunset1.
I remember one evening, I was having dinner with my wife at Smoke on the Water. We were sitting outside on the patio, enjoying the view, when a dolphin surfaced in the river right in front of us. It was such a magical moment, and it’s something that I’ll never forget.
Downtown Riverwalk
The Downtown Riverwalk is another great option for sunset viewing. This 1.5-mile-long walkway stretches along the Cape Fear River, offering stunning views of the Battleship North Carolina and the downtown skyline.
There are plenty of shops, restaurants, and bars along the Riverwalk, so you can make an evening of it. Grab an ice cream cone from Kilwin’s and watch the sun retire over the Cape Fear River.
For a more unique perspective, head to Cloud Nine rooftop bar at the Embassy Suites downtown. This bar offers panoramic views of the city and the river, making it the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail while watching the sunset.
South End of Wrightsville Beach
If you’re looking for a more secluded spot to watch the sunset, head to the south end of Wrightsville Beach. This stretch of beach is less crowded than the main beach area, and it offers stunning views of the ocean.
You can take a walk along the water, set up a chair, or even have a picnic while you watch the sun go down.
What’s unique about Wrightsville Beach is that, due to its geography, the sun actually sets in the west over the waterway. This creates a beautiful and rare phenomenon that you won’t find at many other beaches on the East Coast.
Carolina Beach State Park
For a truly unique sunset experience, head to Carolina Beach State Park. This park offers 9 miles of nature trails, camping, boating, and picnicking.
But the real highlight is the sunset view from the park’s waterfront area. Set up a hammock and watch the magnificent sunsets this park has to offer.
I once went camping at Carolina Beach State Park with my family. We spent the day hiking and exploring the park, and in the evening, we gathered around a campfire and watched the sunset over the water. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.
Fort Fisher State Recreation Area
Fort Fisher State Recreation Area offers a unique coastal landscape with a rare coquina rock formation. This interesting geological feature is composed of mossy hard rock cemented together by seashells and coral.
It’s especially beautiful at sunset when the golden light illuminates the rocks. For the best view, check the tide tables and visit during low tide when the formation is fully visible.
Oak Island
Oak Island is another great option for sunset viewing. This barrier island is located just south of Wilmington, and it offers miles of pristine beaches.
As the day winds down on Oak Island, the sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant colors. What makes Oak Island special is that it’s one of the only Brunswick County beaches facing south, allowing you to see both the sunrise and sunset over the ocean.
